2016 Endorsed Candidates

The following candidates were endorsed by the club at the general membership meeting on April 3, 2016:

Club Endorsed Town Council Candidates

Incumbent Council Member Corinne Kerner

My husband Jim and I have lived in Saddle River for 12 years, raising our two children and caring for my parents who live with us.  Both of our daughters enjoyed their years at Wandell, and we remain strong supporters of our very special elementary school that is truly the center of our community.  I had the pleasure of serving as a Girl Scout leader for my younger daughter’s troop at Wandell and continue to assist with my older daughter’s troop.

We are proud to own and preserve the historic E. J. Roy house, built in 1868 as the summer home of a New York City dentist and his family.  Our home is listed on both the National and State Registers of Historic Homes and contributes to the quaint fabric of our town.  We hope to be here for many years.

Jim and I are active members of the Republican Club and long-time supporters of the Republican Party.  I am currently a sitting Councilmember, having come up through the Republican Club as a member, a Trustee, the Membership Chair and a Municipal Committee representative.  As the Membership Chair, I helped expand the Club from 130 to over 430 members and broadened Republican participation in local politics.  Jim is currently the Treasurer of the Club and previously served as a Trustee.

Professionally, I have over 25 years of experience as a forensic accountant, auditor, leveraged lender and corporate turnaround consultant.  I currently specialize in corporate technology audit and optimization at a growing company owned by Saddle River residents.  My part-time schedule and ability to work from home provides me the flexibility to care for my family and the locally availability to serve my community.

In short, my life is centered around Saddle River.  I live here, work here and my immediate and extended family all enjoy the benefits of a quiet life in a beautiful and unique small town.  It is my greatest desire that Saddle River remain the special place that attracted all of us to make the very discretionary choice to move here.

Council Candidate Ron Yates

Gail & I have lived in Saddle River for 40 years.  We bought here in 1978 and when we decided to move, it was only a few streets over.  We wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

We raised our three sons here - Scott, Todd and Brian.  They attended Wandell when we still had a middle school and graduated from Ramsey High School.  Both Brian & Scott joined the Saddle River Fire Department.  Brian continues to serve, after 30 years and two terms as Chief, and has been instrumental in the revival of our volunteer fire dept. over the last 2 years.   This often takes him away from our family-run business but it's an investment we choose to make for the good of the community.

Personally, I've been active in the community and on town boards for many years, but have never been compelled to run for elected office until now (please CLICK HERE for an explanation of why).  I am a Mechanical Engineer and small business owner who provides local jobs for the community and for our family.  I understand what is takes to run a fiscally sound operation and meet our obligations to customers, vendors and the wonderful people that we employ.  I will apply these same values serving Saddle River on the Borough Council and humbly ask for your vote.

Club Endorsed Municipal Committee Candidates

Municipal Committee District 1 Candidate Dr. Vasiliki "Val" Saitas

Dr. Vasiliki Saitas is a pathologist who currently practices as Sovereign Medical Group’s Pathology director, as well as the President and Owner of Biopath Diagnostic Associates, PC.  She earned her medical degree at the Athens University Medical School and went on to complete her residency in Pathology at the St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City where she eventually became Chief Resident in Pathology.  Dr. Saitas then earned a fellowship in both Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.  After completing her medical training, Dr. Saitas contributed to education in the medical field by holding positions at various institutions.  She was an instructor of pathology at the Jefferson Medical College and later a clinical assistant professor of laboratory medicine and pathology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark.

Dr. Saitas has made significant contributions to the field of medicine through her research and work in hospitals.  She spent many years working in Passack Valley Hospital in Westwood, NJ; first, as an attending pathologist and later as the lab medical director.  Dr. Saitas’s research has spanned a wide variety of topics including therapies for diabetes mellitus and radiology treatments for various pathologies.

Municipal Committee District 1 Candidate Damian Ross

Damian grew up in Ridgewood, where he was an all state football player and wrestler, coach and martial arts competitor.  After graduating Lehigh University with an international business degree, he returned to the area and ultimately went to work for himself.  In 2007, he and his wife Angela started The Self Defense Company, an online training program aimed at teaching people the skills to remove themselves from dangerous situations.  Lucky for us, this entrepreneur is available to answer daytime fire calls and lives so close to the firehouse that he can run there faster than he can drive.

Damian and Angela have been married for 20 years and spent the last 10 of those here in Saddle River, raising two children and building their business.  Wandell School will certainly miss them next year – Damian coaches wrestling & football, Angela was a class mom, a recreation association coordinator and a trustee of the Wandell Education Foundation, and together they taught Judo after school.  Olivia is graduating middle school while Damian is just entering next year.

Municipal Committee District 2 Candidate Tom Connors

Tom Connors has been a resident of Saddle River for 12 years.  Tom and his wife Julie have two children, 12 year old Jack, attending the Smith School in Ramsey, and 11 year old Amanda, a 5th grade at Wandell. Tom has been active in the HHK/SR youth sports programs, serving as an assistant football coach and girls’ basketball coach.

Tom served as Republican Club Treasurer in 2014 and 2015, assuming his current the role of acting President in November, 2015 and was elected Club President for 2016.

Tom is a certified public accountant licensed in NY and NJ and has worked at Deloitte & Touche LLP, the world’s largest professional services firm, for over 30 years including over 20 years as a Partner.  Tom has held a variety of national and regional leadership roles and specializes in helping technology, media and telecommunications companies address complex governance and risk management challenges in areas including financial operations, regulatory compliance and cyber security.
